The Story of the Iron Horse

The famed Iron horse that now stands watch on a knoll overlooking the Greene County Farm of the Curtis family was created by the renown artist Abbott Pattison of the Chicago Art Institute. Working under the sponsorship of a Rockefeller Grant, Pattison sculpted the horse in 1955 in the old fine arts building on the campus of the University of Georgia.

After it's completion, the horse was places in front of Reed Hall on the campus, only to be rejected by students, some of whom felt it's presence got in the way of their football and other games played on Reed Quadrangle.

After four years in seclusion, the horse was moved in 1959 to its present station overlooking the Oconee River on Georgia Highway 15 near the Greene-Oconee County line.

The horse has guarded this knoll for more than 30 years and has become something of a legend as well as a landmark for area residents. The horse of Pattison was the forerunner of many pieces of metal sculpture. It has been admired and enjoyed by untold numbers of passing motorists, many of whom never would have seen the sculpture had it remained in it's original location.

The horse, silhouetted against the blue Georgia sky and towering over a field of corn stalks, appears to be at peace. That peace and serenity is shared by the thousands of travelers who draw comfort from this silent sentinel which remains steadfast, while crops and seasons and life itself change all around it. The Iron Horse has become an integral part of the community, adding to the enjoyment of all who pass this way.

"TIDE" is his call name, but his registered name is "CH. Brumby's Silver Surfer". Tide is a sheltie owned by Ellen Strickland of Oconee County, although Ellen would say that Tide owns her. "He's the dog of a lifetime," says Ellen, who purchased Tide when he was 8 weeks old in Illinois. Tide was first shown when 15 weeks old and has done "wonderfully well" in shows since then. Tide is pictured in the Iron Horse off of Greensboro Highway. Ellen, along with partner Janet Calpin, own Carousel Kennels.

Ch. Brumbys Silver Surfer ( Tide) was sold to Ellen Strickland of Carousel Shelties. Tide was to become our second homebred Champion. This could have never been achieved without the dedication of Ellen Strickland and her partner Janet Calpin. Janet was to become the expert groomer while Ellen utilized her handling skills to finish this beautiful dog. Tide's record speaks for itself with BOB's, Specialty, and group placements. A sincere thanks to our friends Ellen Strickland and Janet Calpin for finishing his championship.
